In this post, we will be exploring the 3 colour codes used during lifting equipment inspection.

Lifting equipment is used in a wide range of industries, from oil and gas to construction, to shipping and then mining. Regardless of the sector or purpose it is being used for, it will be subject to a high degree of stress, strain and pressure. This equipment is made from tough metals and other materials; however, it is important to regularly inspect your equipment.

Upon completion of inspection, the equipment must be tagged using the appropriate colours signifying certification status.

Below are 3 colours applied during lifting equipment inspection:

• Blue
• Yellow
• Green

As part of regulation, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity (FMLP) mandates that new lifting equipment be inspected before use and other ones already in use be re-inspected every 6 or 12 months as the case maybe and appropriately tagged by a permitted Lifting Equipment company.

In their words, “It is mandatory to ensure all portable, loose and fixed lifting equipment are colour coded to give visual indication of its certification status”. It is important to note that the 3 colours (Green, Blue and Yellow) indicate “Fit for Use”. The colours are changed every six (6) months during bi-annual inspections otherwise referred to as “Campaign” and are used to identify non-defective equipment.

In contrast, any lifting equipment found to be defective is tagged with the colour Red.

This measure by the FMLP or DPR and contained in the British (BS), American (ASME) and European Norm (EN) Lifting Equipment Inspection Standards is geared towards ensuring the safety of the equipment users as well as help the owner ensure their equipment stands the test of time through inspection and consequent maintenances, which will in turn save time and cost of procuring new equipment.
